DLK...Sands of Sahara

Postby jan » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:17 pm

I had lasik (monovision) Fri. May18,2007. Sat. night I developed DLK , by time I got a hold of my surgeon I was in stage 4. This week will be 8 weeks, and my sight isn't any better. Researching online doesn't get me very far, and the latest I can find is 2002. Does anyone have any recent info on this? :(

We have a detailed article about DLK that you may find helpful. There has not been much in the way of new development in DLK since about 2002. Once it was defined, catagorized, and treatment was determined (steroid eye drops) there was not much more to say. For detailed medical research I recommend the National Libraries of Medicine.

Going to Stage 4 DLK is quite serious and may cause permanent damage, however there are bad cases of DLK that after many months cleared to near-normal visual acuity. I very highly recommend you seek the opinion of a corneal specialist.

DLK update

Hi Faithworks...
and YES Faith does work!! Try to keep a positive attitude. :)
I see my lasik Dr every 4 weeks, who by the way, is one of the best opthalmologist in this part of Texas! I have heard stories about people flying all over the world to try and get an answer and a 'fix' for DLK, and there just isn't one out there...what we are doing is the best there is offered right now....that's what I have read and am told.
With each visit my vision gets better and better WITH a contact. He started me with a contact back in June, my vision with the contact then was 20/80. Last month I was wearing a +3.50, and today he lowered it to a +3.00 (20/30), and the 'sands' or haze is 99% better. Without the contact I don't see very well, I think I have scarring, so I am praying that will change.
He has told me over and over as long as we can see a change, then we we do not want to go in for an 'under the flap cleansing' or an enhancement and take the chance of disturbing what progress we are making! I totally agree...as long as I have improvement each month.
He did keep me on the steroid drops until August, so that was 3 months...3 times a day, to 2 times, to 1 time, to 0 on Sept 4th. Sure I am disappointed, but it is something I have learned to live with and the nervousness has faded away...it really really made me nervous for awhile!
I'd say just don't give up hope.
I'd like to hear how you progress...and you will progress!!
Good luck...Keep the faith...and God Bless! :)

hi jan,

That is soooooo heartening to read. I am glad i found someone like you to encourage me. I am not sure how did you wear contacts over a flap with DLK. As far as I know, I thought the DLK being below the flap, cannot be nullified with contacts. Because even if you do wear contacts the light will have to pass through the DLK patch. Please give me knowledge on this. Also, if you can, can you please PM me your number ? I am down since the day i have done this LASIK surgery and I need words of encouragement. Also, I would like information on the doctor you are seeing. It would not be a great idea to display numbers and names on a public forum. So, can you please forward me your number by private message or something. Thanks. Faith should work. God Bless.
