Stem cell cure for dry eyes from lasik?

Postby rogfar » Sun Jul 19, 2009 6:56 am

I remember seeing this article about how stem cells were applied to contact lens and they successfully repaired the cornea of patients. Since the lasik dry eyes are generally due to the cutting of nerves in the cornea, could this be used to repair?

The current theory of nerve disruption causing Lasik-induced long-term dry eye is that the severed nerves do not heal correctly and the nerve signals are not getting through to the brain. It is not the quantity of the nerve cells that is the problem, but it is the functionality of those cells. Additional nerve cells, even healthy ones, may not be the answer, but I will mention this to the surgeons and scientists I know who are working on solutions to long-term Lasik dry eye problems and let them run with it. They are much more knowledgeable than I. It is an interesting theory.
