Are my eyes too bad?

Postby hippie_clementine » Mon Nov 20, 2006 11:29 pm

I've just started doing research into laser surgery and I'm wondering if it's possible for your eyes to progress to a point where they are "too bad" to benefit from laser surgery. I just had an eye exam done and my prescription got worse again, I'm now at OD -11.75 OS -11.50. So is it possible that my prescription is so high that I'm not a candidate for laser surgery?

You are most certainly at the high end of the safety and efficacy margin. Regression is likely, meaning enhancement surgery is likely. Lasik is less predictable for corrections of greater than about 8.00 diopters. You would need thick corneas because a lot of tissue would need to be removed.

You should research Phakic Intraocular Lenses (P-IOL).If you are old enough for your name to be a legitimate adjective, then you should also look at Refractive Lens Exchange, but be checked by a retina specialist first.
