LASEK uses an alcohol solution to disrupt the epithelial cells. This solution can seep into the edges of the Lasik flap and weaken its seal. The seal will return, but some doctors have claimed using manual removal of the cells is better. It is very much a matter of personal preference and the long-term results will not be affected either way.

Any ablation on a Lasik flap will very likely use Mitomycin C to reduce the probability of haze. Haze is almost guaranteed if you have PRK/LASEK on the Lasik flap without Mitomycin C.

Have you heard about that new drug in clinical trials called Nexagon by CoDa Therapeutics out of San Diego? I read that they applied the drug to a New Zealand construction workers eye after having his eye doused with concrete. It apparently healed his burned epithelium. Do you think this new drug may one day replace Mitomycin C and be utilized in Lasik?
