Thinking About It

Postby Vicki Phillips » Tue Feb 27, 2007 11:52 pm

What do you think the chances of success with LASIK are for the following eyeglass prescription:

OD -3.50 +1.75 x90 +1.50

OS -6.50 +3.25 x90 +1.50

Also, what alternatives to LASIK would you suggest?

Thank you-

The add 1.50 at the end of your prescription indicates that you wear bifocals for near vision. You are probably past age 40. Lasik may reduce your myopia (nearsighted, shortsighted) vision and may reduce your astigmatism (irregularity of the cornea), but it will not eliminate your need for reading glasses. In fact, your need for reading glasses may be exacerbated by what I call Sudden Presbyopia. You should consider monovision.

For alternatives to Lasik, you may want to investigate the surface ablation techniques of PRK, LASEK, and Epi-Lasik. Your astigmatism may make correction limited, but you should also consider Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE).
