Custom vs Regular Lasik

Postby DryEye » Fri Sep 08, 2006 5:20 pm

Is there a noticeable difference in outcomes?
If you had a choice what would you choose?
A surgeon who has performed tons of surgeries vs one who has perfomed less (Say 30,000 using regular vs 5,000 using custom) what is the better choice?
Thanks

Yes. Virtually all studies and the FDA clinical trials showed that candidates appropriate for both wavefront-guided and conventional laser ablation had better outcomes with wavefront-guided. Note that not everyone is an appropriate candidate for wavefront-guided.

I did have a choice and I chose what my doctor recommended. In my case it was wavefront-guided.

Think of the most difficult and detailed task you perform. Consider you have done it 500 times. You are probably pretty good by now. Do you think you will be significantly better at 5,000 times? 30,000 times? Probably not.

It is easy to get into a number's chase. Also, you want to look at the surgeon's previous and other experience. A corneal specialist at a teaching hospital who has performed 250 of what you will receive may be a better choice than one of those doctors we lovingly refer to as "Lasik Jockeys" who have performed tens of thousands of Lasik but little else. What you really need to determine is if the surgeon has enough practical knowledge of what you will received, not if the surgeon has the most practical knowledge of what you will receive.
