Decided against PRK

Postby falldrive » Tue May 27, 2008 6:14 pm

Hello all,

So I decided not to go through with the PRK surgery after all. I was just not convinced of the safety of MMC long-term; the bad press surrounding LASIK recently did not help either.

I've decide to give contact lenses a try again and I am at the end of my wits with my contact lens problem and hoping for some help.
I have been wearing contacts for almost 8 years without any problems until one day my right eye just felt uncomfortable with the contact lens in it. I went to my doc, he said nothing was wrong and to try changing my brand of contacts. I did this and my right eye felt fine again for about 3 months until I got that same irritation in my right eye. I tried changing brands again, a few times with a few brands, but the feeling wouldn't go away. I even refrained from wearing my contacts for 4 months hoping a long break would make a difference, but it didn't. Now, no matter what brand I try (and I have been "fitted" for too many to count), the feeling does not go away. I have been tested for GPC a number of times, but I don't have a trace of it. I don't have dry eye and have been tested and treated (drops, plugs) for that too. I've changed doctors and exhausted both with this mysterious uncomfortable feeling in my right eye. It is not a pain by any means, and my eye is not red or itchy, but it is uncomfortable and has forced me into glasses. This feeling is in the upper left side of my eye, under the eyelid. Does anybody have any idea what this could be. I'm desperate for any advice. My doctors just keep shrugging their shoulders.
Also, does anybody know any contact lens specialists (if there is such a thing) in the general Toronto area? I know this is not the forum for this specifically, but I am desperate for help! Any ideas would be appreciated...

You can always revisit the laser vision correction surgery issue later. I'm sorry that I don't have much information for you about contact lens use.

Hi falldrive,

I can't say I had the same sensation as you did with contacts but before I got LASIK I was having some issues with my contacts and it turned out to be the solution. I was basically unable to wear contacts and nothing had changed but there was something about the solution that my eyes no longer liked.
I would try getting a few different brands of solution and see which works best or at all for that matter.

I hope that helps.
Cheers

Its funny this is your problem. I had a similar problem. Had been wearing toric lenses for the better part of 17 years with no problems. I all of a sudden found my contacts to be uncomfortable. Just always felt like they needed to be changed, so I went to my OD, and he suggested I switch my contact solution. I had been using Opti Free forever, and my OD said that he has had patients use this solution for years, and then develop an intolerance to it. So he suggested I switch to CLean Care, and boom, no problems. it was totally the solution. After years of using the same, it turned out that was the only problem! You may want to ask about this...
