I think . . . This website has been invaluable to me so far, as I very recently had PRK vision surgery and since have had many questions and concerns. After having many near nervous breakdowns about the issues that I am currently experiencing, reading the posts on this site has kept me sane.

This site is a great central location for information for those seeking details on any refractive surgery including Intacs for keratoconus. The questionnaire is very helpful in asking questions of your doctor. If any doctor is intimidated by these 50 questions then I wouldn't go to him/her.

This site has been a wonderful resource. Glenn answered so many of my questions that I felt my Dr. didn't have time to answer. Because of the advice obtained here my eyes are continuing to improve and I feel much less alone and helpless. I cannot imagine how I would have been able to cope if this site was not available. Thank you Glenn, you have really made a difference in my life! Betty39

Thank you for providing extra information for hyperopic lasik treatment. I live in the UK and have lasik treatment recently and was becoming concerned about my level of postop nearsightedness. Or perhaps I should say the lack of 20/20 vision after 24 hours. But after reading (this link)http://www.usaeyes.org/faq/subjects/hyperopia.htm I now realise why I had to be overcorrected and now expect a longer period to achieve the optimum result, probably after some regression over the next 12 months. I also realise that this regression will actually improve my distance vision but at the expense of my near vision. When I've read about lasik the recovery period is always quoted as almost instant. Perhaps now lasik hyperopic procedures are becoming more commonplace, this information should be included in all lasik patient literature, everywhere in the world. But this shouldn't detract from the excellent job you are doing to make this information available to the masses. With the power of the internet everyone can benefit from your web site - personally, I can't stress how grateful I am for the service you're providing. Thanks again USA eyes, and long may your organisation develop and prosper!!

I want to thank Mr Glenn Hagele for his prompt and clear reply to my questions and doubts following my Lasik surgery. I also thank him for his continued assistance. My sight has not improved to my expectations and my right eye has blurring and part of the vision is hazy after 3 weeks. I find it a strain to work on the computer since it results in a headache. I am not sure of climbing up or down stairs with vision in each eye being different.Mini,India.

Had Lasik 8 1/2 years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. 8 1/2 years later, same surgeon went for an enhancement. Didn't know he was taking my near to mid vision away to give me distance! Plus my distance vision is still bad! What a shock. I have been devastated, sick to my stomach, unbalanced, blurry and constant headaches. Surgeon keeps saying everything is fine and I'll get used to it. NEVER. This website has helped me understand what happened in the obvious breakdown in communication between me and my doctor. Hopefully, my problem can be reversed after the proper hell time (I mean healing) has passed. My initial gut instinct was to leave well enough alone. I should have.

I think this website is definetly a good source of informed consent prior to getting any type of refractive surgery, however I wish I could have known about it prior to my Lasik surgery. Because I put a lot of trust in the doctor, not thinking that Money seems to override Humanity. Personnel knowing what I know now...Ain't no type of elective surgery worth taking any risk to your health, especially your vision. I think corrective surgey is a big Joke and shouldn't exist, but hey I'm no Expert. Just speaking from experience and smart enough after the Tragedy of Lasik, knowing that the Risk HIGHLY outweigh the Benifits. Keith, USA

Thank you for your much appreciated comments. It's funny how the doctors tell you that everything is going well, this after experiencing headaches, one eye overcorrected, and experiencing halos & starburts (typical LASIK sypmtoms). It appears that the doctors look at it from a business perspective. Again, my sincere thanks,

Dear Mr Hagele, Your advice has actually saved me and allowed me to come back to fully normal life (after terrible dry eye syndrom). I was using artificial tears with preservatives, and they really made my eyes condition even worse. No eye doctor here, in Latvia, could help me. But in the article from the first link it was said that one should ese only preservative free artificial tears. When I started to do so, all syndroms disappeared. I can now work at the computer 12 hours long without feeling anything, but earlier I couldn't even 2 min. Thank you very much!!! Antons from Riga, Latvia.

Lisa in Cincinnati here. Glenn is unbelievable! He is thorough, detailed, professional, and keeps answering that "I have one other question" with complete patience. Where else can you find a person so accessible and willing to answer every question you have AND with such a quick response? When you're talking about your eyes, it's very scary to us novices who just don't understand the medical "ins and outs" of the Lasik procedure. I wish there were more Web sites that had a "Glenn" that they could go to with their questions. I've never seen a Web site that you can come away from with such complete, informative, and professional answers. Thanks, Glenn. You're great!

It's nice to find someone who knows what they're talking about and is willing to explain things in detail. I was shocked to find a doctor at a local clinic did not know what Epi-lasik was, and another doctor at a different clinic who wouldn't take the time to explain everything in detail. I have several conditions that complicate my options for surgery. This website and Glenn's assistance on the newsgroups and over the phone were invaluable. He went above and beyond the service of any doctor or informational service I've found. Thank you! Dan, Memphis

I think . . .I am totally impressed with this web site & the quick response I got to my questions when I asked your opinion on my particular situation. I love being able to input medical conditions particular to myself & receiving an honest appraisal as to how this might effect my outcome on any particular procedure. I have shared your web site with family members who are also considering lasix or cataract surgery. I wasn't sure I was comfortable with one surgeon with whom I"d had a prelim exam. Since he is also not listed on your site, I've decided to wait until I can find one who is listed. I truly appreciate having a site that works for the consumer in a matter of such great importance!! Your site and the free opinion that I received (very promptly) from your expert have been tremendously helpful to me. I got much more information and in much greater detail than I could have hoped for. It was much more info than I have received from the doctors who handled my surgery and the ones in charge of my post-op period. Of course it is also very reassuring to get this data from someone who is completely independent of the group who sold me on the surgery! I no longer feel anxious about post-operative symptoms that I am experiencing following my PRK surgery. Thanks again so much. Michael Kensington, MD

I think . . . that the website and is great and I actually wish there was more data. When deciding to do lasik surgery, I think I researched about every site that I could and only found minimal information. (All sites pretty much said the same thing, but did not go into detail as I would wish). I relied heavily on interviewing people who had the surgery. It is obvious that more statistical data is not published because results "other than 20/20" data would probably not be positive for lasik surgeons. But as a person wanting lasik, I still think I would have taken the risk, even if statisics showed that you may have 20/20 vision, but as a result of 20/20 vision a certain percent do not have clairty, night vision etc. There is no good data on that type of information. In addition, speaking for myself and others who take a longer time to heal or have side effects, I really would like more data concerning the side effects vs the percentage of folks who have them, what type of laser was used, age, gender, prescription (prior), and what things can be done to help with the healing process or even what can be done if your eyes don't heal. I understand that my surgeon should be answering all of these questions, but this is information I would have like to see prior to getting the surgery and would like to see now as some sort of support and to know that it has happened to others too. There are a lot of chat/e-mail sites where people place their concerns and fears, but do not get real responses. I don't think that many people who have positive results will broadcast as much as those who have negative results. I also wonder how many people are telling the truth when it comes to the side affects. I know that I am kind of embarrassed to admit to people who told me "don't do it" that things are not all perfect in my vision world. I think what you are doing here with your website is very good and I hope you are able to carry it to the next step. I am willing to fill out any survey you many need to add data for statistical information that may help not only patients, but surgeons who can look at the information and learn from it. I only hope I make the correct choice now with the enhancement surgery. I cannot get any advice if it is even beneficial for me to go to a surgeon with a specific type of laser, etc. I will have to go into this blind folded as I did with the first surgery. Thank you, Lynette Myers Castle Rock, Colorado

Thanks Glenn for your quick response. I was not aware that RLE was an option for people with a healthy (pre-cataract) lens. Your site is very informative and empowers the consumer to get the facts before they embark on any surgical procedure.

I appreciated your timely response to my question. I had sent an e-mail to another website on LASIK and never did receive a response. All over the internet there is information on how you shouldn't do LASIK with an autoimmune disease, but I couldn't get information on my specific situation. I didn't want to waste my time going in to get a consultation done if MS was going to automatically take me off of the "good" candidate list. Thanks!

I find this website very useful as a neutral database on Refractive Surgery. I wish there was a topic on "post-op Quality of vision". (ie how you can measure that the operation has been successful with more parameters than the classical 20/20 which doesn't take into account other effects) (ie a WYSIWYG toolkit) I was looking for some information about Epi-lasik. Glenn dropped me an email with very interesting content. Thank you. Since then I started a wiki on this subject to collect information on this technique.  Olivier Seres (Paris, France)

I think . . . That the Lasik websites are a good reference to provide an honest understanding of the side effects of Lasik... I read this and other sites before making my decision. Based on the following: 1. Was my prescription "average" 2. Did I have any other "red flags that suggested that i shouldn't have Lasik. 3. Highlighted the importance of having a good surgeon. My update is that I am almost 72hrs post surgery and I can see 20/16 right and 20/10 left. After more than 20 yrs wearing glasses, my brain is having some trouble adjusting, but that part is coming along as well. Please read and understand all the risks, and become knowledgeable before undertaking this procedure! Green Bay WI

This forum is great, like others have mentioned its hard to know who to believe. Ones eyes are so important, but not always covered by insurance and sometimes I feel pulled by personal or corporate interest. Thanks for advice on post - op problems (mine are happening 7 yrs post lasik and may or may not be related to the surgery). This kind of problem is harder to find good information on that problems occurring right after surgery. shad

This site is the most important source of information available for those persons considering Lasik surgery. A tremendous amount of work went into creating USAEyes.org, and it would be a true pity for someone to go into surgery without looking through the site. Perhaps "50 tough questions for your LASIK doctor" is the most crucial section to read, although all are important. Patients must realize that not all doctors are alike, and they must know the considerations necessary for choosing a good one. This site will help you do that. Its reading is not a luxury, but a necessity. LASIK surgery is serious stuff. Thank you, Glenn. Dale, NY

I think . . . I found the web-site and Glenn's prompt, easy to follow response very useful in aiding my decision regarding a proposed enhancement procedure. The original intralase treatment has given me an over-correction and irregular corneal surface. Based on what Glenn said, I believe there is no need to rush into a second treatment (it has been less than 3 months).

Dear USAEyes, I have written to you this past September about my CK (conductive keratoplasty) experience. I don't have anything good to say about CK and I wouldn't recommend it to any baby boomer seeking better close up vision. CK didn't work for me, it only left me with blurry close vision and some distorted far vision. I still have to wear reading glasses to read, see photos and even to see the food I'm eating. CK has left me with an undercorrection over my pupil and and overcorrection below my pupil (astigmatism). After 8 months post CK, my doctor at [redacted] Eye Clinic, Dr [redacted] in Maumee, Ohio, has refunded my $1500. I will never know what CK could have done for me. But I want to thank you so much for being out there, listening to me and offering your suggestions. I am very afraid to have any kind of enhancement done at this time. I will just wait. Currently I am seeing another specialist who is working with me using different contact lenses as you suggested. I need to know if my distorted far vision and blurry close vision is due to this irregular corneal steeping. Thanks again. Paula Clark

I think . . .You have a very informative website. I just found out I have cataracts and am considering the Crystalens procedure. I am farsighted with astigmatism. I am 56, with uncorrected vision that is not too bad, but I don't feel has ever been as corrected as it should have been, although I have been wearing glasses since the Sixth Grade. Dear Glenn, Thank you very much for such a fast reply, I am impressed! Some of the simplistic explanations added the "what it means to your vision" aspect to the parameters of the aberration measurement I should, as an engineer having studies some optic, understand (and think I do). Cheers
