Man jumped from Atlanta high-rise because he failed test
A 22-year-old Atlanta man, distraught over not passing a high school equivalency test, committed suicide late Friday morning by jumping from the balcony of an 11th-floor apartment in Midtown, police said. The man, whose name was not made public Friday afternoon, had also been upset because he believed his boyfriend was more intelligent than him, Atlanta police Lt. Keith Meadows said. The man and his boyfriend were talking in the apartment they shared in the Plaza Midtown condominium building when the man got a strange look on his face, walked onto the balcony and jumped, Meadows said.
MARTA eliminates 180 jobs; no cuts in service, official says
Buffeted by the weakened economy, MARTA plans to eliminate about 180 jobs, top officials said Friday. Many of those cuts will come from eliminating unfilled positions from the books. Some workers already knew their jobs could end June 30, since they were hired to work at stations and help passengers understand the new Breeze Card system when it was implemented.
Teen killed breaking into home
A 24-year-old man shot and killed a teenage intruder Friday after the youth and some other juveniles tried to break into the his northwest Atlanta home, police said. The shooting occurred around 1:15 p.m. at 1426 Hawkins St., off Chappell Road, police said. The victim was 16 years old, said Lt. Keith Meadows, commander of the Atlanta Police Department homicide unit. His name was not made public Friday afternoon.
