Des Plaines, IL (April 4, 2006) – The Medical Advisory Panel of Addition
Technology, Inc., awarded the best paper at the 10th Intacs Roundtable
to Luis Cadarso, M.D., of Vigo, Spain.
Dr. Cadarso’s paper was “Intacs for Keratoconus: What to Treat –
Coma or Astigmatism?” It reports on placement of corneal implants based
on the steep topographic meridian and the impact relative to location
of the coma aberration.
“Dr. Cadarso’s work may assist to answer why some keratoconus patients
receive significant improvement in visual acuity without improvement
of similar magnitude in corneal topography following treatment with
Intacs,” commented David Schanzlin, M.D., Prof. Clinical Ophthalmology
and Director, Refractive Surgery, Shiley Eye Center, Univ. of California
San Diego, La Jolla, CA, and chair of Addition’s medical advisory panel.
Penny Asbell, M.D., of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City,
also an advisor to Addition Technology, suggested that “We know Intacs
return contact lens tolerance in greater than ninety percent of those
treated. Dr. Cadarso’s work, while based on a small number of cases,
may help us to improve visual acuity in an even greater percentage of
patients.”
“Surgeons around the world now utilize Intacs as a problem-solver
for keratoconus and ectasia, a great example of the FDA’s Humanitarian
Device regulation working to the benefit of patients with rare disease
indications,” said William Flynn, chief executive officer of Addition
Technology. Dr. Cadarso’s presentation and those of other doctors can
