Punctal plugs??

Postby annie » Tue Aug 15, 2006 6:47 am

Ive been told that dry eye condition is a common result of lasik surgery. The place im am going to suggest getting punctal plugs which are $100 per eye or to simply use artificial tears. Is it worth going with the plugs if i dont really have an initial issue with dryness?? or would it just be the same to go with artificial tears? Ive heard some people go through a couple bottles of the tears a week, so im wondering if the the cost would even out. Thanks for the help!!

If you do not need punctal plugs, then there is no need to buy them. Even if you do have a dry eye problem, that does not mean that punctal plugs is the answer. Punctal plugs tend to work best if there is an aqueous deficiency. What if you have a lipid deficiency instead? What if you have no tear deficiency at all?

If the place you are considering for Lasik is attempting to sell you punctal plugs in advance of surgery, then they may be selling you something you do not need, will not need, and may even make the situation worse.

Read our article on Lasik and Dry Eye where you will find a plain language explanation about Lasik and tears. You will see that purchasing any treatment for a malady that does not exist is not only unwise, but is also potentially counterproductive.
