Dry Eye/ Microstriae II

Postby DryEye » Wed Jun 21, 2006 3:20 am

Is there a specific timeframe (after Lasik sooner rather than later) for the usage of Restasis after Lasik?
Can one try using Refresh Tears, Systane Preservative Free & Omega 3's to resolve Dry Eye & Microstriae and then if unsuccessful after a month or two after Lasik try the Restasis along with what they have been doing (Refresh, Systane, etc.)?

Restasis is an anti-inflammatory. If dry eye is caused by inflammation around the channels that carry tear fluids, then Restasis is an appropriate choice. The problem with Restasis is that it takes three months to achieve full effectiveness. Relief can come earlier, but not full relief. I suppose this is a good argument to start Restasis three months before Lasik, but you can always start it later. Restasis has a specific purpose and if that purpose is required, there is nothing else that is going to do the job.

Systane and preservative-free artifical tears will provide temporary relief, but will not cure the problem itself. This is appropriate to maintain eye lubrication while you heal from surgery, but if the dry eye is caused by other issues then those issues need to be directly addressed.

Omega 3 essential fatty acids and flax seed oil are great if the lipid layer of the tear film is distressed, but can actually be problematic if taken in quantity and the lipid layer is normal. Dry eyes is a balance and treating the wrong side of the balance will not necessarily be helpful. This is why a comprehensive examination by a competent doctor is so important.
