Just a quick update. I had an appointment yesterday and my vision right now is a blurry -0.25 and -1.75. I've been taking the Restasis for six weeks (my surgery was 3 months ago yesterday) and I'm not seeing any clearer. I think I'm producing just a little bit more tears. The doctor said to be patient another 2-4 weeks and the drops should kick in. He still is not worried and says the blurriness is due to the dry eyes.

I have a question, though. Once I do start producing tears, on average how long before the vision starts to clear?

If the blurry vision is due to dry eyes, the improvement will be almost immediate.

Hi Folks,

I have a little bit of an update. I've been taking Restasis for about 3 1/2 months and things are starting to improve slightly. I can see noticably better in my reading eye but I can't see an improvement in my distance eye yet. I'm still doing Optive eye drops during the day (but not nearly as much as a month ago) and an eye ointment at night. The ointment is messy but sure does improve my comfort level during the night. That's it for now.

Well, a new development. Last Friday the optometrist said I had swelling in my eyes. He put me on a steroid drop and I go back to see him in about three weeks. I've been on the drops for four days and my vision in my distance eye is getting worse it seems. I'm not having any pain or pressure from the drops and my eye pressures were normal when he checked them last Friday. The distance eye seems to be OK but both eyes still have the smokey/hazey thing going on when I look at lights. Any thoughts???

Inflammation could be the cause of some of your symptoms. The steroids can cause blurried vision, but only while you are taking them and if you have inflammation you need to take them. Keep us updated!

Well, it looks like I'm going to have some "tweeking" done in the spring. It's been 6 months and the Restasis is working well in my reading eye and getting there in my distance eye. The distance eye just wasn't done quite enough to make it perfect vision. My prescription was 7.8. Also, the surgeon said I have some kind of corneal dystrophy. He told me the name but I can't remember all of it. It wasn't Fuch's. Anyway, he might do PRK instead of Lasik so he can address the dystrophy when he goes back in. He told me before my first surgery that, due to my high prescription, he might have to do some more work. Does this sound like a normal solution?

Needing to retreat a Lasik patient who started over 7.00 diopters myopic (nearsighted, shortsighted) is completly expected. Now that your dry eyes seem to be managed, whatever you can see through corrected lenses with a refraction (which is better, one or two?) is what you could reasonably expect from enhancement surgery.

Lasik enhancement and PRK on the Lasik flap are both common methods to resolve residual refractive error.

Dystrophy means a degeneration of tissue. Lasik and PRK reduce your need for corrective lenses by removing corneal tissue. I highly recommend that you be evaluated by a corneal specialist before additional removal of corneal tissue. You need to understand clearly what consequences, if any, additional treatment may have on the long-term health of your eyes.
