Dry eyes worse :(

Postby Betty39 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 2:56 am

Hi Glenn,

I am now finally out of my systane free liquid gel. And as you know, they recalled it. I have been without it for 4 days now and I feel like I am almost back to square one. There is NOTHING that has helped me like this product. I've tried them all. My eyes are back to burning most of the time. I am now 4 months post op and I am begging my doctor to refer me to a specialist of some kind. I can tell he doesn't want to for some reason. The assistant said he would call me back tomorrow and tell me if the doctor will refer me. I am facing the fact that this is most likely going to be a chronic problem for me. I felt like I could cope but now without the only drop that helped me I feel like I can't. My vision remains crisp and perfect. I don't know why this is with my eyes feeling like they do. It makes no sense to me. My doctor also said he has seen drier eyes than mine so I don't know why mine feel so sensitive. I am doing everything in the article about dry eyes (supplements, etc) what else can I do? Any suggestions?

Hi Betty,

I know you're going through what I'm going through with dry eye. I liked the Systane Free as well, but two months ago (about the same spot where you are now...4 months in) my surgeon put me on Restasis and my eyes are doing better, but still get dry sometimes...no where near what it was though. It's definitely helping me. They say it takes about a month to notice an improvement, and I'd say that's about right...maybe 5 weeks.

So I'm 6 months in at this point, have been on Restasis for two months (usually at 8AM and again at 8PM each day), I'm taking 1000mg flaxseed oil 3 times a day, plus a multi-vitamin and 1000mg vitamin C once a day. On occasion, I put one drop of Soothe eyedrops in while at work if I feel my eyes are a little dry. For me, it looks like it may take a full year to recover, but I'm seeing improvement. Tomorrow is my 6 month follow-up, so we'll see what the doc says. Hopefully my vision has improved from the last time, though it's not perfect. Night vision is still filled with starbursts, and I doubt I'm 20/20, though I'm probably pretty close.

I know you've been suffering from the dry eye in a bad way and it's frustrating that it is taking so long to resolve, but have faith that it will eventually improve. Ask about Restasis...maybe it will help you get through these winter months. Spring and summer will bring moisture to the air and we'll all be better off.

Did your doc even offer the plugs? Just wondering? Because mine just stuck it in without any big dry eye complaint. like it was a normal the next step procedure. I dont know if it will help. But thought it was typical application for them to do.

I was on restasis before procedure. How long should 1 be on that stuff. If you read the warning info. I think it has carcinogenic results on rabbits or something. Didnt seem like something to use as a maintenance med to me...

I am 8 months post custom lasik.
Get the Systane preservative free vials.
They work the same and are preservative free.
I still use them at night before bedtime.
They cost a bit more, but it's the price we pay until lasik issues resolve.
Try Theratears preservative free vials & the Resfresh Endura preservative free vials.
Things will get better even if it is a grind.
I have had one heck of a ride so far, but i think it will get better with a little more time.
Let us know.

Restasis becomes fully effective after about 90 days of use. It is possible to receive some benefit before these 90 days. Restasis is a low dosage cyclosporine anti-inflammatory and can be used so long as it is necessary.

I think I read that Restatis only works on a low number of people...is that true? I have had all 4 wholes plugged in my eyes. I am doing everything else I've read to do. I don't know why the dr. is hesitant about sending me to a specialist. I want the tear testing done. He has never done any testing to see what it is that is causing my problem. I see people with glasses on and I want to cry. I wish I had left well enough alone. I am sick and tired of my eyes stinging. On a pain scale to 10 it's only a 2. But it is CONSTANT. And it wears me down. It's gotten so old.

try genteal gel for moderate to severe dry eyes. it will make your eyes blurry during the day but you can use it at night or if you have a few minutes to close your eyes or allow you vision to be blurry. it worked great for me.

caution this gel will cause vision blur for a short period of time so don't use while driving. operating machinary...blah, blah
